Humanistic counselling
Humanistic therapy places importance on understanding you as a whole person and recognising that your experiences, relationships and circumstances all contribute to how you feel.
The therapeutic relationship is central to this approach.
I offer a space where you can explore your thoughts and feelings openly, without judgement, and at your own pace.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
CBT looks at the relationship between our thoughts, emotions, physical responses and behaviours.
When we are struggling, certain patterns can sometimes develop and keep difficulties going. For example, anxiety may lead us to avoid situations, while avoidance can make the anxiety feel even stronger over time.
CBT can help you understand these patterns and, where appropriate, develop new ways of responding.
This may include practical strategies, behavioural changes, developing alternative perspectives or gradually facing situations that have become difficult.
An approach tailored to you
Although different therapeutic approaches offer useful frameworks, I don't believe therapy should feel like a formula.
Some people want time to understand and process their experiences. Others prefer a more structured approach with clear goals and practical strategies. Often, therapy involves a combination of both.
We will discuss what you would like from therapy and review together what feels helpful as the work progresses.
Taking the first step
Deciding to contact a counsellor can feel daunting.
You don't have to know exactly what you want from therapy, or find the right words to make sense of what is happening.
Free initial consultation
I offer a free 15–20 minute phone or Zoom consultation to all new clients.
This gives us an opportunity to briefly discuss what has brought you to therapy and what you hope to gain.
I also want you to feel at ease with me. The connection in therapy is important, and often you just sense when someone is the right person to talk to.
There is no obligation to continue after the consultation.
Your first session
If we decide to work together, our first session will be an opportunity to explore what has brought you to therapy, what may be contributing to your current experience, what you would like to achieve, and relevant aspects of your personal history.
We can then begin to think together about how therapy might be most useful for you.
Ongoing therapy
The number and frequency of sessions will depend on your needs and what we agree together.
Therapy is a collaborative process, so we will regularly consider how you feel the work is progressing and whether anything needs to change.
